February 2017 Update

❤️ Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

In honor of this love-sharing day, I thought I might come out of my cave to give you guys a much-requested update. Some of you ask, “Kel, have you even started the book?” Yes, yes, I have. I’ve written over 400 pages of KDT goodness (or darkness—however you want to look at it). But, it’s not finished, and I prefer not to guess at a release date because you will undoubtedly be upset if I don’t meet it. Honestly, I work better when I don’t feel the pressure of an impending due date.

I am often asked which other books I like that are like KDT. In lieu of releasing Book 3, I have prepared a list of fantasy books by other authors that you might enjoy. You can find this list under the new “Suggested Reading” tab on my website. The list is far from complete, but I could probably go on for days. (Disclaimer: For most of these, I’ve fallen behind in the series and haven’t read all the books. I’ve been busy. 😎)

Please feel free to comment and add your favorites to the list!

(Remember to mark posts containing spoilers with **SPOILER** before the rest of the comment.)

  1. Kel, will the audio book be released quickly after the print version? Have both but the audio was great nighttime listening 👍🏻

    • Would love it if the audio were released at the same time. For those of us who are attention-challenged, audio plus text is the only formula that allows us to read for fun anymore.

      • I agree with that fully! Audio books have changed my life. Busy work at the office, and long traffic lines. I’m a totally new person. Go go audio book!

    • I hope it is released soon after. As a truck driver I lack the time to read a book. I found that audio books are just as good although I do miss buying a new book and smelling that new book smell.

  2. Thank you so much for making the suggested reading list! Your books made me read for fun again, but unfortunately, after finishing book 2, people recommended The Kingkiller Chronicles… Well, let’s just say that now I need more.

    • Check out The Night Angel series by Brent Weeks if you haven’t already. Also, his series The Lightbringer is just brilliant (heh).

Also, Shadowdance series by David Dalglish is a finished 6 book series that is very cloak and dagger, and actually reminds me a lot of KDT, though with a more “What if Rezkin broke out from the fortress when he was a kid (small man)” kind of thing going.

He has another unfinished series (The Seraphim series) that is also incredible.

Also, Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne by Brian Staveley is amazing.

And lastly, Kel has it on his list, but The Broken Empire is just phenomenal writing. I usually despise First Person Narrative, but this one is just so incredibly well done.

      • I actually found this series after trying to find something similar to The Night Angel trilogy and highly recommend reading it and his current Ligtbringer series as well (I’m on chapter 65 and I don’t want to have it end yet). Brent Weeks is currently my favorite author with Kel Kade practically his equal (my opinion though).

I’m also on the 4th book of the Shadowdance series and its also very good, although I don’t think it’s as good as The Night Angel trilogy or KDT. Still a good read so far.

Also the Ryria Chronicles is another fantastic series I picked up shortly after finishing the second book. I’m nearing the end of the first book in the last volume and loving it.

Just realized I need to finish up these series before moving on but there’s too many good series out there at I don’t want to stop looking for them “sigh”.

      • I concur about the Night Angel series including the novella and I recommend Jim Butchers’ Dresden Files series even more vehemently and to a lesser extent the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind!

  3. Thanks Kel. I have loved both of the first books and KDT has surely become one of my all time favourite series. I am extremely excited to explore the rest of Rezkins journey and all of the awesome stuff he pulls off.
Can’t wait to find out if he can use magic, I feel like there has been some foreshadowing there.

Keep up the good work mate. Take all the time you need until the book satisfies your own criteria, you would only regret otherwise.

    • You can’t believe that he’s not a Mage! He revealed his power to Wesson, before hiding it again – its only because Rezkin believes that he has no power, that it is able to remain hidden.

I’m more concerned about the adversary that the General mentions- I think that Rezkin was not the first trained Shadow Knight, that his predessessor and the Usurper will be more difficult to take down than the Theives Guild or even the Black Hall (why didn’t he use the mage rope, geez rule 47 have the necessary tools)

Huge fan of the series, I may be impatient but I would prefer the ingenuity, originality, and

      • Rez pretty much HAS to be a mage and it just hasn’t come time in the story arc to reveal/confirm such 100% numerous things all lend towards this and when taken all together it becomes basically a foregone conclusion not the least of which being that 100% of the members of the royal line are supposed to be mages and whether brother, bastard half brother, or even first cousin to the mad king he should be talented as a mage and most likely is just not fully trained and I think your idea of his belief in NOT having such powers is a major part of why he seems to NOT be “talented.”

  4. Man oh man! Was this needed! Can not wait for book three. Glad to hear that you are knocking it out, I was starting to feel a bit stalkerish visiting your website weekely to get an update. Good call not rushing yourself if the third is anything like the last two it will be fantastic. That being said…. realllllly looking forward to a release date! 😎😂

  6. Thanks for the update. Check once a week to see what’s going on. I cannot wait for book 3. All the books are great and I am sure book 3 will be just as good. Wish you the best on the rest of the book.

  10. I thoroughly enjoyed your books but I think you need to change publisher.

Now I understand this is a business and you have to make money, fair enough. Except now you release updates like this teasing your fans when I know the book is already finished and you’re just waiting to release an offshoot book to make more money. The first two books were obviously one book that the publisher decided to split for monetary purpose. Please don’t let greedy publishers ruin another great series like Peter V Brett or GRRM. Less is more and Da Vinci died penniless!

    Like

    • I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I’m self-published. (Except the audiobooks, which are produced by Podium Publishing.)

I did originally write Books 1 and 2 at the same time, but I split it because the book was too long. People are sometimes hesitant to start a massive tome by a new author. It had nothing to do with making more money. In fact, when I first released the books, I figured I could call it a success if I sold 50 copies! 😂 I only charged 2.99-3.99 for each, plus I listed them with KindleUnlimited, so people can get them for free. That’s hardly a formula for fortune, and you’re still getting both books for less than you would have paid through a mainstream publisher.

I know you’re all excited about Book 3, which is awesome, but it’s really not finished. I did want to release a side story before Book 3 but not just for more money. It is a story that needs to be told to enhance the plot, but I think it will bog down the flow of the main arc if I include it there. I decided early on to wait on that because people are eager for Book 3, and I think it will fit between Books 3 and 4 just as well.

Thanks for your support. I hope you continue to enjoy the series.

      • A lot of that was a stab in the dark. I assumed after the success of your first two books you would have been snapped up by a publisher for sure! They were obviously one book!
Honestly I just don’t want your quality to drop. I would recommend your books to any friend of mine except I am loath to recommend an unfinished series. Please keep doing what your doing and in the meantime I guess I just have wait! (Unless you need beta readers (I don’t belong to any forums on any website!))

  11. Love the series, tried the audiobooks and I think I’ll just stay with my own head. I think they are well done, just not the medium I prefer. Thanks for showing us your world and I look forward to the next book! And I’m sure you don’t need anymore but I’d definitely beta read for you if you did.

  12. Kel! Don’t rush it please! Take your time with it because the wait will be well worth it! I’ve never read any of your books and just saw book one on audible. Since I had free credits, I thought I’d take a chance! You didn’t disappoint! I’m definitely excited for number 3 to come out!

  13. Take your time… Of course we are all impatient to read it, but creating a good book is what we all want above all.

And if an amateur copy-editing reader is wanted, I’d be happy to volunteer. I’ve been almost studying the first book (need to do a close re-read of Book 2 still), for the KDT Discussion Group… which has been a lot of fun.

I ask this as being dyslexia I have much trouble reading your books and have fallen in love with the audio books. Just another groups of your fans looking forward to KDT book 3

  15. Whatever people say, take as much time as you want. This is your show. There might be some unpleasant or ungrateful comments accusing you of doing this or that. Whatever it may be, and even if you are doing exactly what some of the readers accuse you of doing (which I don’t believe one minute) remember you don’t really owe us fan anything in the end. We can appreciate, make comments, criticize, but we all know it is up to you when all said and done.

You won’t lose any people with even more delays are needed. People go on with their lives, and once they get that notification via twitter or whatever way you choose to announce the new book, we will all come back, there is no doubt about it.

We can await your novels with eagerness, and our fandom of your novels sometimes make us think that you owe us thus we make unreasonable demands, but again that is a fallacy. I think you should take the unpleasantness with flattery, it means people are really really into your novel.

I just wanted to say that b/c I seen some self published writers fall into that trap. There is a lot of pressure b/c today’s writers are as connected to their fans as ever and it may be tempting to give in to the fans and many times that leads to bad decisions with their novels.

    • As true as all that is I bet most wouldn’t mind just a little more news now and then as to how the next book is coming along, a tiny sneak peak at something, something you’ve read that was awesome (kinda like this post) or hell maybe just a good line or two from the next book to help shelter us 🙂

Just a bit of news a little more regularly (maybe every week or fortnight) would go a long ways to keeping up the pace!

On a side note do you happen to have any idea when or if the books will come out in print? And do you by any chance have an idea around when we should expect book 3, like spring this year, March, April, summer, tomorrow?

  21. The first book was 483 pages and the second book was 587 pages, so I estimate that the third book will be approximately 690 something pages. so by the time this update was published, he was approximately two-thirds finished. Assuming that he began writing as soon as the second book was published, January 2016, then he has about five months left.

Of course, I am only guessing as he could possibly publish the third book tomorrow. the only reason I am doing this is because I like numbers. I once calculated the size of a fictional planet based off of time traveling distances given in an anime because I was bored. so don’t take this too seriously.

I just want to say thank you for helping me keep my sanity by giving me an outlet like the Raven. Don’t feel rushed on finishing book 3 because you can’t put a due date on perfection! The momentum and mystery of the protagonist makes me yearn for more. This is seriously one of the very few series I can get lost in.

Hope the process is going well! Having no release date is a smart move; perhaps it’ll make for an excellent surprise as well.

  25. Seems like something happened in the writing process, because you seemed pretty confident with a December 2016 release, and now it seems as though the third book is out indefinitely, or “until it is finished”

Do you ever worry about losing readers who forget to continually keep up with series updates?

    Like

    • If you read the post, I think it sounds more hopeful than confident, which was not unrealistic at the time. I decided to take the story a different direction than originally intended for the third book, though, so it requires more time. There’s no point in worrying about losing readers. If they want to read it, they will–if not, they won’t. I’m not going to trade a good story for instant gratification.

I say confident, becasue you said if not Dec then “soon” after, that has an air of confidence to me, hence nearly finished. But it is your book and you are definitely able to do as you wish with it.

Thanks for the reply, love the books.

I am looking forward to book 3 and will purchase the entire set when it’s finished. I frequently read series multiple times to catch the missed details but KKC has finally cured me of buying into series that aren’t complete. Continue with the wonderful writing you have already done.

    • This is probably sacrilige to fantasy fans, but I haven’t had the time to read or watch Game of Thrones. I think I watched the first season years ago when it came out. I don’t remember there being an Ashai. Now, I can’t start because I know I’ll get caught up binge watching and won’t get my own writing done. Also, I don’t want GoT to influence KDT.

  33. Hey Kel Kade. I’m eagerly awaiting your third novel. It seems that if you have a hit a snag in reworking the story. You should not feel pressured into trying to complete it quickly. I think your readership would prefer you take the time you believe you need. That said, even updates consisting of only a single statement that you are alive and well would be greatly appreciated.

As for Series recommendations, I want to go old school with the “Death Gate Cycle” by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. That series is what got me into fantasy when I was younger in the early 2000’s.
