Happy April Fool’s Day

Dear Readers,

I’ve been asked to provide an update, if for no other reason than to let you know I’m still alive. I am. Yeay! I’m also still writing. Double yeay! (No, that’s not an April Fool’s prank.)

While I am now writing full-time, I am currently working on several projects, not just KDT. I know, I know. You’re all screaming, “Just give us the third book!” Here’s some of what’s happening.

A number of years ago, I started working on a Ph.D. in geosciences. I spent countless hours in coursework, research, and laboratories. Summer and winter breaks were not spent lounging on the beach or binge watching Game of Thrones (which I still haven’t had the chance to watch/read, so no spoilers!). No, I was in the field far, far away from civilization, almost completely cut off from society for weeks at a time. Yes, there are still places on this planet without internet or cell phone coverage!😲

I endured the physical and emotional rigors of traveling both domestically and internationally, not only to perform said research, but also to stand beside posters and at podiums presenting to rooms full of scientists with far more experience. These were exciting times but also stressful, and I had to swallow the pain of spending much of it away from my child. All of my degree requirements were completed except for the dissertation. Five years and a combined $100K in student debt later, I ran out of funding and was left without a job. Sorry, no Ph.D. for you!

Did I mention I’m a single parent? Financial woes. Two years worth of job searches yielded only a bit of part-time teaching at college. A masters degree in geosciences means little when the market is saturated with job seekers laid off by a struggling oil industry.

I could not sit idly, though. I began writing to fill the time and perhaps to escape for a while from my unproductive despair. I was nearly finished with the first installment of a story when someone started nagging me for attention. He was relentless. He was fantastic, brutal, brilliant, and utterly clueless. The others were silly and made me laugh. I had to write them down before they disappeared forever. Far from the path of my derailed dreams emerged King’s Dark Tidings.

While I am still working diligently on KDT, thanks to your support and appreciation of this series, I can afford to finish my doctoral program before time runs out and all my hard work (and money!) is wasted. Some of you may be frustrated that I cannot focus on KDT 100% of the time. You’ll have to trust me when I say it’s better this way. I am far more productive when I reach a balance between my analytical/logical mind and my creative one. I am capable of working on multiple projects at once.

I may be providing you with an entertaining story, but your readership is helping me to achieve my dreams.

Sincerely,

Kel

  1. This series is a lot of fun. Updates are awesome, although I think readers believe we are owed all the information ever. It is delightfully refreshing to have an author explain why things are the way they are, but not necessary. I really hope you get what you need and i’m sure the writing will take care of itself. Thanks for your work!

  2. I am happy to hear about you getting your phd. but the date this was posted made me wonder if the thing was a joke about not having the 3rd for some time only this seem likely to be real which is cool. updates on April fools day always make me wonder

  3. Why would you want to chase a PhD, a full time writer is more lucrative. Unless you want to be a professor then you will need PhD.

I dunno why you want to have 9 to 5 job instead of just do the writing full time. You already have popular and very good series that can make you a millionaire.

I dunno if you heard a guy name Justin Shier who wrote super awesome book series, dieter resnick adventure. That guy pursuing a Dr career and now his awesome book project is dead at book 2. I hope that will not happen to you.

PhD need hardwork and full concentration, i knew coz i already do it and stuck in the middle.

I wish you good luck to do both. Please do not become another Justin Shier.

    Cheers

    • Sometimes it’s about you passion and not the money. Maybe he want the doctorate more than being a writer. I quit a $100,000 job because I’d rather teach high schoolers. Follow your heart Dr. Kade.

  4. Happy to hear you are not binging on Game of Thrones but I gotta tell ya, it is VERY addictive. So don’t have anything planned when you start to watch/read and have all the breakables put away.

Also glad that you are doing what is necessary to make you happy. If a PhD is what you what then go get it especially after all the hard work you have done. Also glad that you plan to keep writing because this storyline is great.

As an independent you might be interested in researching what Michael Anderle is doing on Amazon. He started writing the Kutherian Gambit Series.

Love both books and can’t wait to see what’s next! Take as much time as you need to make it great ………ok maybe not to long 🙂

  6. I wonder if we can get a cover reveal or something like that?

BTW most of the books i like are written by people with science degrees who decided to write a book out of boredom or something, so theres no problem with being a writer and a scientist.

  7. Dawn of Wonder The Awakening by Jonathan Renshaw is another great fantasy read that could be added to your list. I am awaiting book 2 of that series as well. I would argue that you and Jonathan Renshaw are the evolving poetic fantasy writers of this time.

    • I read the book and while I was looking at similar books afterward I found this series! So I guess I owe it to the awakening.

  8. Get that Ph.D! My wife just earned hers and I’ve never seen her feel more accomplished and proud. I enjoyed the books and will be happy when the rest of the story comes out but for me it will feel better reading it knowing you’re following through with the Ph.D.

  12. I was just wondering, in Reign of Madness when Rezkin is purchasing his Dark Tidings sword. What was the inspiration behind the overal design, but also the mate material. I find that every time I listen to these book the more I wonder of the inspiration behind the little, or bigger storyline items.

  14. Kel – That is fantastic about finishing up your Phd! Soooooo much work that goes into it, and now you have your opportunity to finish it – huge kudos to you!!! A must do, go for it, get ‘er done! All of your fans of KDT will survive, altho there may be kicking, screaming and pouting by some, hahaha! I bet when you’re working on KDT, it’s like a fun break from the Phd work. I have to say, the two books were so fun and engaging, so I am also quite excited to read the next when it is out. And let’s be honest, the most important part of the equation is family, so being a single parent is numero uno! Wow, dude, you have got lots on your plate. But in some ways its the best way to be 🙂 Good luck with it all!!

  15. Can we get an update on the book? Wrote anything awesome in the last month? Would love to hear how you are getting on with the doctorate.

    Keep in touch!

  16. It amazes me that people are begging for a update when he just gave us one. With many authors we are lucky to get two updates in a entire year. I feel the author has been very generous thus far with transparency and keeping fans in the loop. Just finished book two and I want the third right now, but fully realize that these things take time. I feel the reader is fortunate to get one book a year from any author.

  17. Please, please finish your doctorate first! As a recent master’s graduate, I know only a fraction of the sweat, tears, and dedication that you’ve put into your doctorate so far. Please do not let your fans keep you from finishing your thesis!

My hope is that, in the end, you can eventually do both — Finish your doctorate and then finish your book. That would be the best of both worlds. We can wait. Really. We can.

    • I appreciate your encouragement and support. I’m finding time to work on both, so you should be left waiting too long. I hope you continue to enjoy the series. Congratulations on your master’s!

  18. Kel, just wanted to say thanks for KDT. It’s been a great escape for me. It’s funny to find that you’re a geoscientist, because so am, haha. I’ve been in the oil and gas industry for 5 years now, and I’m about to lose my job because of acquisition lay-offs. I’ll be spending the next few months finishing my MS thesis, which I’ve been neglecting for the past 5 years. KDT has been a great stress outlet, and I’ve been listening to the audiobooks constantly. Good luck to the both of us, and good luck in your writing and parenting! Can’t wat for the third KDT! Cheers!

    • So glad to hear from the geo-peeps. Sorry to hear about your job, but maybe you’ll find a new outlet for undiscovered talents. It happens. I wish you luck on your MS thesis and in finding a new job/career! Also, good reading!

  20. Thank you for writing what you have and giving us a fun world to explore. Your a great author and if you choose to give up writing to pursue your dreams I will be sad because this series so far is my favorite. However fulfilling your dreams is something we all wish to accomplish and few ever achieve. Good luck we wish u well and we also secretly hope you dream of writing more novels as well. Thanks Kel.

    • Don’t worry. I am absolutely not giving up writing. This is an unplanned but fun and exciting career to explore. I do have some unfinished business, but I’ll keep writing. I have a long list of stories to tell!

  22. Just found Free the Darkness. Excellent book, a very enjoyable read. You have an interesting writing style-very straightforward, I like it. Possibly related to your scientific background. I just purchased book 2, and am looking forward to the third book, but first finish up the PhD before time running s out! Book 3 can simmer for a while (ah, the slings and arrows from fans’ outrage!) You certainly have a full plate at the moment, I will watch for the third book at some point in the future. Thank you for the fun reading.

  25. I really enjoyed this update. It’s always cool to hear how a book/series (like KDT) was born out of a more difficult time in an author’s life. However, it’s even cooler to hear how creative writing has not only become a new passion in your life, but one that is helping you to achieve your old dreams as well! Chase after both – keep writing, and get that PhD! Continue to find the healthy balance between them, as well as with being a single parent. Best of luck!
(Also, I am extremely eager for book 3. But I can wait. Although I really want it. Still, take your time. Ahh, the tension between my mind and my heart…)
